More About African Steminist

The African Steminist was founded by engineer, Dhruti Dheda. The African Steminist tells the stories of countless African women in STEM. We deeply believe in the power of telling stories to create change. Effective storytelling can alter the negative narrative surrounding women in STEM, especially women of colour in STEM. Many African girls will not consider STEM as a career field if they are unaware of successful women in STEM. Representation matters- you can only aim to become that which you can see.

It is a fact that women only make up 28% of the STEM workforce, especially in the fields of engineering and computer science. These fields, which have such a huge gender gap, are set to have the fastest growing and highest paying jobs in a future marked by artificial intelligence. The economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic has affected women disproportionately, increasing the gender gap.

The voice of women, especially African women, need to be equally included in STEM spaces to ensure that the technology of the future is inclusive and accessible to the whole of society, and not just a certain social demographic. We need to design the tools that will mold our future.
